SAMPLES FROM LESSON NINETEEN

ASSIGNMENT NINETEEN
Read the poem Joyful Senses. Although I named the emotion in this poem, I also used plenty of word pictures. Choose an emotion and write a poem similar to mine. Think about things that make you feel this emotion. You can name the emotion in the poem, but surround it with showing language. Although I used five senses, you may want to use three or four. I used the sense of taste because it referred to the scripture that says to "taste and see that the Lord is good." The sense of taste may not fit into your poem. (You do not have to list, as I have done, the senses alongside the poem.)

Joyful Senses
Joy enfolds me when
(Sight & Touch) the sun's rays, golden warm, wrap my skin,
(Sight & Sound) scarlet red, the cardinal's wings flutter against the green,
(Sight & Scent) blossoms sway, pink and light, lending perfume to the air,
(Sight & Sound) springs of water, bubbling, singing, call me to their sides.
Joy increases when
(Sight & Taste) tasting the Lord's goodness, I feed on His sweet Word.

Here is a poem written by one of my students. He took the idea from Joyful Senses and changed the pattern to suit his poem.

Sadness is Like

(Touch & Sight)

The sting of a bee's stinging tail
(Smell/Perhaps Sight) The odour of pollutant air
(Sound & Sight) The wailing cries of lost souls
The death of a good friend.
Sadness also
(Touch, Sight & Taste) Stings my lips like the bitter lemon.
