SAMPLES FROM LESSON TWENTY-THREE

ASSIGNMENT TWENTY-THREE: Write a poem that has at least one metaphor or simile. You may want to write a poem that contains both. (Your poem does not have to rhyme.)

In this assignment you may choose to include your title as part of a metaphor. One of my students used this technique in the example below. The title, God's Peace, is compared within the poem to a gentle stream and a soft, quiet whisper.

Student Poem:

God's Peace

A calm, gentle stream (Metaphor: God's peace is compared to
Flowing through my soul; a gentle stream and a soft, quiet whisper.)
A soft, quiet whisper,
Like the sound of Rustling leaves; (Simile: The quiet whisper of God's peace
A heavenly touch is compared to the sound of rustling leaves.)
Seeping through me . . .

------God's Peace.
